This box was made by Cochrane & Co of Dudley and this style was made from 1873-1878 and has a medium diameter with a low aperture. This type of box is known as a Penfold after the designer JW Penfold whose design was chosen for the first standardised national pillar box that was introduced in 1866.
It is box number DT1 85 and can be found at the junction of South Walks Road and South Street in Dorchester, Dorset.
It was spotted by our Puddleduck friends, Nikki and Gorete, on 10 October 2024.
